I haven't got to spend as much time as I had hoped in the deer stand this year. However, I went out Saturday the 5th (rifle season in KS) with a buddy who was bow hunting. Before the sun came up a small spike worked in from the South (wind was out of SSE). I was sitting on the South side of the tree and my buddy was sitting on the North. About 15-20 yards out was some corn we had thrown out that morning with some apple cider vinegar poured all over it. It's my belief that those bucks will smell that vinegar from a mile away because it sure does seem to bring them in. About ten minutes after the sun came up another buck worked in from the East/Northeast and started working on his share from the corn. He was a big bodied fork. Another half hour or so after that another spike worked in from the East. I was hoping to see some does or a big buck but didn't get my eyes on anything of that nature. From reading up on other hunters from around the region it seems to be that the bucks are filling themselves up with some calories after the rut. Saturday evening my buddy went out and did get eyes on two doe and the fork again. Overall, even though I haven't spent much time in the stand or blind this year, it's has been a better than average year in terms of excitement. The times that I have been out it's been great. Well hopefully to make up for lost time in the stand I can offset that with a Pheasant/Quail trip to Western KS this January (the quail numbers sure are up on that side of the state) and some good fishing this winter/spring. If there's any hunters out there still don't give up! Those bucks are on the move. Get out to the stand!
